Data for this report is from the the California Secretary of State Elections Division and GrassrootsLab GrassFire Directory (www.grassfiredirectory.com), a unique and comprehensive database that closely tracks, updates and categorizes local jurisdictions, elected officials and key staff members in California Cities, Counties and School Districts. Data for Silicon Valley includes all of San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County, and the cities of Fremont, Newark and Union City in southern Alameda County, consistent with the definition used in Joint Venture Silicon Valley’s annual publication, the Silicon Valley Index. Bay Area data includes the nine counties that border the San Francisco Bay: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, and Marin. For the purposes of this report, local elected officials are defined as any person elected through a city-wide or county-wide election to represent at either the Municipal, Mayoral or Supervisorial level. Race/ethnicity of elected officials are based on publicly available documentation that those officials self-identify with a particular racial/ethnic group.Other party affiliation includes American Independent, Green, Libertarian, Natural Law, Peace & Freedom/Reform, and Other.
