In Silicon Valley, 227 local elected officials represent more than 3 million residents across 39 cities and two counties – averaging out to more than 13,000 residents represented by each elected official. This research brief provides a snapshot of the region’s elected officials as of April 2017, including those serving on City and Town Councils and County Boards of Supervisors. The brief also provides the composition of Silicon Valley’s elected officials with respect to partisan affiliation, professional backgrounds, gender, and race/ethnicity. It finally includes a comparison to elected officials in the 9-County San Francisco Bay Area and local elected officials throughout the state of California. The data for this brief comes from the GrassrootsLab GrassFire Directory, a unique and comprehensive database that closely tracks, updates and categorizes local jurisdictions, elected officials and key staff members in California cities, counties and school districts.
