Data for Median Household Income are from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 1-Year Estimates. 2020 data are from the 2020 1-Year Public Use Microdata (PUMS) with experimental weights. Data for San Francisco for the year 2000 is from the Decennial Census. All income values have been inflation-adjusted and are reported in 2022 dollars using the Bay Area consumer price index for all urban consumers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for Silicon Valley and San Francisco data, the California consumer price index for all urban consumers from the California Department of Finance May Revision Forecast (April 2023) for California data, and the U.S. city average consumer price index for all urban consumers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Silicon Valley data include Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Median household income for Silicon Valley from 2001 – 2005 was estimated using a weighted average based on the number of households for which income was determined.

Household income includes wage or salary income; net self-employment income; interest, dividends, or net rental or royalty income from estates and trusts; Social Security or railroad retirement income; Supplemental Security income; public assistance or welfare payments; retirement, survivor, or disability pensions; and all other income; excluding stock options.
